Let's talk about being grounded

For me, being grounded is living in the present moment and reconnecting with what is around you; physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally. It's all about coming home to yourself. Imagine it as the roots of a tree going deep into the earth. When I think about being grounded, I think about being calm, centered and connected.



I have had Reiki clients ask me "How do you know if you are grounded or not?" "How do I become more grounded?" I respond by saying that being grounded can look different for everybody but, the following examples may help point you in the right direction.

A grounded person is:

- Content in their own skin

- Rooted but open to possibility

- Reliable & trustworthy

- Proactive rather than reactive

- Encouraging & supportive of others

- Able to maintain balance & stability in their life

- Present & calm

- Understanding & accepting of their emotions

- Respectful of themselves & others

- Able to live with a sense of purpose & direction


There are so many ways that you can become more grounded. Here are some examples for you:


1) Take mindful breaths

Deep breath in through your nose and slowly breathe out through your mouth ( try this 5 times) This exercise is simple but effective.


2) Meditation - Body scan/Mantra

  • Body Scan - You can find these meditations on Spotify, Insight Timer and YouTube

  • Mantra - Put some relaxing music on in the background. When you breathe in, in your mind, say the word 'calm' and when you breathe out, say the word 'relaxed' (continue doing this for 5-10mins)


3) Disconnect from social media/the news

Yes, there are some things we need to be aware of but, having the constant noise of negativity is not good for us. Try switching off your TV, radio and phone for 24 hours and notice the change in your energy.


4) Go for a walk in nature

Nature has such a healing affect on us that merely being in its presence can be magical. Take yourself out for a walk, without your phone and feel the benefits of it straight away.


5) Use affirmations

Affirmations are powerful. Try using ones that align and feel good for you. Some might be:

I am rooted in this present moment

I am safe and secure

Like a tree, I am rooted firmly to the earth


6) Let your bare feet touch the earth

Honestly, this is a must do! Get yourself outside and take off your shoes and socks. Stand on the grass, feel it beneath you and take some mindful breaths.


7) Drink water

Water is extremely grounding and will help you feel more centred. Make sure you are getting at least 2L a day.


8) Listen to music

Listening to music can have such a calming affect on your body and your mind. Listening to your favourite songs can make you feel relaxed therefore helping you become more grounded.


9) Have an energy healing

Whether that's Reiki, Sound healing or any other energy healing, this can reset both your body and mind. The energy can make you feel lighter and more balanced resulting in you feeling grounded.


10) Journal your thoughts

Writing down how you feel can get things out into the open, it can stop the monkey mind in your head from spiralling into 'worst case scenario' situations. By you being aware, understanding and accepting of your emotions, you are therefore going to feel better about yourself which will lead to a more grounded life.


11) Try 'mindful of the senses' exercise

This exercise is bringing you into the here and now and allowing yourself this time to see the beauty of what surrounds you. You will feel so much more content and centred after this exercise.

12) Declutter your space

How many of us feel so much better after we have done a spring clean or have sorted out our clothes for the charity shop? I know I do anyway! So, when you have a physical space that is no longer cluttered, you are bound to feel mentally clearer too. You are allowing more peace and tranquillity into you life, therefore resulting in a more grounded energy all round.
